Using CD-RW disks with Express

I just bough a new CD-RW drive (Yamha) to work with express. Express would not work with a """supported""" cendyne drive.

I tried a back-up of 6G. It used 9 700meg 12X Memorex CD-RW(sealed, out of the box) and it took eights hour to do and verify.

It had 179 errors and did not complete the verify leaving 256 files not accomplished!! The errors were 206, ""can not read what I wrote"!!

Why doesn't Express stop when its making write/read errors???

How do I insure that my Media, my drive and Express will work? Together??!!!

Wasting eight ours is not an option again!

Thanks for any in-sight!!!

So, how about some more information? What Yamaha drive are you using? While in Retrospect, go to Configure > Devices > Environment and list Vendor, Product and Version for your drive.

Is this USB? SCSI? IDE? Firewire?

Was ASPI installed correctly? Run ASPICHK (in the Retrospect Program Files folder) to make sure ASPI is "green." If not, try a reinstall (ASPIINST.exe). If you still have problems, consult the Retrospect User's Guide or Adaptec's website.

Is this Windows NT or 2000? If so, enable NT SCSI Passthrough to bypass ASPI: From the Retrospect Directory hit Ctrl-Alt-P-P. Under "Execution," check "Enable NT SCSI Passthrough." Click OK. Quit and relaunch.

If you still don't have any luck, I'd recommend the following hardware troubleshooting steps.

Try a different disc in your drive. If you're trying discs of the same brand, try at least one of a different brand. We recommend Sony, TDK or Verbatim.

Try straightening out the internal ribbon cabling.

Try switching master and slave settings.

Try new internal cabling.

Try updating the firmware on the device if possible (see the drive manufacturer's website).

Are the drivers for the IDE controller current? Try updating them with an approved update from your PC vendor.

Finally, try bringing this drive to another PC and trying the backup. If it works here, you could be having a problem with either the ATAPI bus on the original machine or with the PC itself.

What problems were you having with the Cendyne drive?

Dantz Development Corporation - Retrospect Version 5.6.132 OEM

I also own a copy (not OEM) of Retrospect Express(does not work any better) I also own a copy of Nero( V5.5.9.9), but I removed it to use the version which came with the yamha CD-Recorder.

IN-CD 3.38.1 ( I had it to the latest with my Nero 5.5.9.9 and it didn't work any better, same kind of errors)

I tried ASPICHK, it said OK

I tried setting to Enable NT SCSI Passthrough with no sucess. Internet disconnect through Zone Alarm Pro.

What do I do now? Rent a software_witch_doctor?? Or is that a Retrospect_witch_doctor!!!

I think I should return to Novadisk!!!

Check to make sure you have the latest USB firmware update for your computer. Hardware vendors often release firmware updates that may help to resolve USB issues. Search the vendor web site for Updates.

Retrospect lists the current firmware of the drive that you are using in the version column of the Device Status (or Environment) window (accessible from Configure -> Devices). Check with the drive manufacturer for any USB, FireWire or firmware updates. If there is a known problem with a firmware version, this will be listed on the Dantz website. www.dantz.com/hardware

Try a new piece of media to see if the problem is related to a faulty or damaged medium.

If applicable, try using a different brand of media. Often drives are picky regarding the brand of media. Follow the manufacturer's recommended list of brands.

Isolate the device. Another device on the chain may be interfering with the backup device's communication. If your backup device is connected to your computer through a hub or another USB device, unplug it and connect it directly to a port on the computer. If it is already connected directly to the computer, try changing ports. If the problem persists, do not reconnect the other devices, and continue down the checklist.

You may have a bad cable. Replace the cable that connects the device to the computer.

Completely uninstall any other third-party backup software that may be on your machine, including any drivers that software may have loaded for the device.

The system board or USB adapter in the computer may be having a problem. Install Retrospect on another computer, if available, and try the device there as the only device.

The device itself may be defective. If you have implemented all of the preceding steps and get failures on new media after changing media, cables, software, firmware and computers, then the backup device, being the only factor that has not changed, is the the last variable. Contact your drive vendor for further diagnostics, tests, or to inquire about repair or replacement.
