Error 206 on verify, disk not identified

New user to Retrospect, since my CD-RW was not supported by V6 (said it was). Bought new cd-rw and new 12X cd-rw media. Used 5.6 express and Nero(5.5.9.9) supplied with Yamaha

It required 7 hours to back up 8gigs and about 1.5 hours to verify(ha) backup. During the compair I noticed compair speed reduced to 1M/min on or about the 4 or 5 disk, It started at 5M/min on the first disk with zero compression and ended running about 30m/nin 5% compression.

The first errors for '206' identified the # 1 disk, the majority of the errors did not identify the disk (or, maybe disks).

the ending message after compair is

4/4/2003 3:48:42 PM: 168 execution errors

Remaining: 56 files, 321.0 MB

Completed: 39738 files, 5.8 GB, with 5% compression

Performance: 30.2 MB/minute (22.3 copy, 48.3 compare)

Duration: 07:28:40 (00:48:40 idle/loading/preparing)

error many times is::

Trouble positioning: "B_U Set A_AMD1.4" (597), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

Trouble reading: "B_U Set A_AMD1.4" (597), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

Yamaha CRW-F1E - This drive is absolutely supported in version 6.0. I use it at home for my own backups and have been pretty happy with it. It works great.

However, that doesn't mean that other factors in your environement can't interfere and cause errors. I couldn't tell from your post which version of the Retrospect Driver Update you're loading. This information will be available in your log. The minimum required version is 3.1.107.

What brand of media are you using? Many CD burners are picky in regard to media. We recommend Sony, Verbatim or TDK. I use TDK - Costco always has good deals on it.

Was ASPI installed correctly? Run ASPICHK (in the Retrospect Program Files folder) to make sure ASPI is "green." If not, try a reinstall (ASPIINST.exe). If you still have problems, consult the Retrospect User's Guide or Adaptec's website.

Is this Windows NT or 2000? If so, enable NT SCSI Passthrough to bypass ASPI: From the Retrospect Directory hit Ctrl-Alt-P-P. Under "Execution," check "Enable NT SCSI Passthrough." Click OK. Quit and relaunch.

If you still don't have any luck, I'd recommend the following hardware troubleshooting steps.

Try straightening out the internal ribbon cabling.

Try switching master and slave settings.

Try new internal cabling.

Try updating the firmware on the device if possible (see the drive manufacturer's website).

Are the drivers for the IDE controller current? Try updating them with an approved update from your PC vendor.

Finally, try bringing this drive to another PC and trying the backup. If it works here, you could be having a problem with either the ATAPI bus on the original machine or with the PC itself.
