This is a follow-up to call-in incident #1589500 on 2/13.

Retrospect version 6.0.206 with Retrospect Driver Update version 3.6.104 is now installed on Windows 98SE. The PC isn’t connected to a LAN. HP Colorado 8 GB is supported according to your website. Configure Devices’ environment is as follows:

ID: 3:1

Vendor: HP

Product: Colorado 8GB

Version: 2.08

Driver: HP Travan (1.11)

After the incident call, the following configuration was tested:

== Retrospect Driver Update was installed (as noted above)

== The tape drive was switched from EIDE slave to master. (The other drive on the cable was completely disconnected.)

== HP Colorado Backup II software and Retrospect were uninstalled and Retrospect was reinstalled.

== Windows’ MSCONFIG.EXE was used to block the loading of “startup group items”.

********** The problem remained.

The problem isn’t limited to a single data cartridge. Two HP C4425 T4 data cartridges (the media HP recommends for this drive) produce identical results.

The HP Colorado Backup II software was reinstalled and used to back up and verify the partition with 2.6GB of data. The two data cartridges were reinitialized and each was used to perform a back up and verify without problem. Therefore, the tape drive and cartridges apparently don’t have hardware problems or conflicts because HP’s software uses them without a problem. Also, the HP tape and drive diagnostic program shows that the tapes and drive pass all phases of testing.

Please note that when the Retrospect backup and verify is failing, the floppy disk drive (drive A:) performs a “ready” test about every 25 seconds during the verify phase. A subsequent Verify Media will produce a Operations Log, like the one below, reporting the contradicting combination of “Execution completed successfully” and “Completed: 0 files”:

+ Executing Verify at 2/17/2003 9:47 PM

To Backup Set INfoSIGHT-03A...

2/17/2003 9:47:19 PM:

Remaining: 96 files, 25 KB

Completed: 0 files, 24.1 MB

Performance: 180.4 MB/minute

Duration: 00:00:17 (00:00:09 idle/loading/preparing)

Since I will have to replace the HP software when I upgrade from Windows 98SE to Windows XP, I am willing to perform any reasonable test to get Retrospect to work. Is there a diagnostic driver to analyze the problem?
