Error 105 terminates backup operation

I am backing up over a 100BT LAN. I am getting "Device trouble error 105 (unexpected end of data)" termination messages and no backup performed. This happens whether I backup a G4 over the LAN or backup my local G4. Both machines are running OS 10.2.3, local G4 has Retro Desktop 5.0.238, remote system has Retro client 5.0.540. Error code is not listed in my manual, and I haven't found relevant discussions on the boards here. Have done the usual fixing permissions, etc. Can anyone suggest where I can start to reinstate my backup functionality? Thanks for your help.
