VXA-1e drive reporting full tape as erased

Recommended Posts

I have had a problem with two different VXA-1e Firewire drives, both running Retrospect 5.0.238, with driver update 3.1, 3.2 and, most recently, 3.3. One time this ocurred under Mac OS 9.2.2, the other two times were under Mac OS X 10.2.2. When a scripted Normal backup session is running, and the current tape becomes full, the "Please insert a tape that is erased or named..." dialog appears, and the status area below indicates that the tape that is currently in the drive (the first member) is erased. Ejecting and reinserting the tape continues to show that the tape is erased. In all three cases, many successful sessions over multiple weeks had been written to the tape without incident. I have spoken with Exabyte about the problem, and they concluded that Retrospect was not writing an "end of file marker" on the tape when it became full.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a solution?
