not sure which version to update to!

Recommended Posts

We currently backup several Macintosh computers both within an AppleTalk zone and using the TCP/IP address for a few computers which are not in the AppleTalk zone. The computer we use as the backup computer runs on Mac OS 8.1. Two people in our office recently bought new iMacs which run Mac OS X. When we tried to install the Retrospect Client software on these two computers, it would not install. Do we need to upgrade our entire Retrospect Backup to the 5.0 version? If so, I believe it would not run on the backup computer we use (since it runs Mac OS 8.1). Alternatively, can we just buy newer client software for these two computers? If we do that, will Retrospect 4.2 be able to backup these computers as clients?

Please let me know what our best course of action is so that we do can keep our configuration and scripts intact and can just add these two new OS X computers onto our backup scripts without changing the client software on all the other computers backed-up to that script.

Retrospect 5.0 is required to backup OS X - locally or as clients. You'll need to upgrade your application and your client licenses.

However, Retrospect 5.0 is a carbon application (designed to run on OS 9 and OS X). OS 8.x does not support any carbon applications (Retrospect or otherwise). The following are the minimum requirements for Retrospect 5.0:

* PowerPC-based Macintosh computer (G3 or better under Mac OS X).

* Mac OS 9.0 or later, or Mac OS X version 10.1.2 or later.

* Under Mac OS 9, minimum 64 MB of RAM memory (128 MB recommended).

* Under Mac OS X, minimum 128 MB of RAM memory (256 MB recommended).

* Hard disk drive with a minimum of 50 MB free space.

You won't need to upgrade the physical client software on the non-OS X computers, however, you will need to upgrade your client licenses used to log them in.
