Retrospect freezes between copying and verifying

Recommended Posts

Having a problem with retrospect 6.1.138 with the 6.1.16.100 driver update. Retrospect often freezes upon completion of backing up, but prior to performing a verify on the data. Occasionally it will verify fine, but these are rare occasions.

We are currently running Retrospect on an intel Xserve with snow leopard but were running it on a powerpc g4 xserve with 10.3 server. Other changes since the G4 are a new atto scsi card. The issue has remained constant.

The backup set is a bunch of LTO3 tapes in an HP tape library.

Any ideas how we might get it to verify?

Broken. You need to upgrade to Retrospect 8. Retrospect 6.x is unsupported on Snow Leopard. See the Retrospect Snow Leopard Compatibility Statement

Tried to install Retrospect 8 but can't get it to work at all...

Assuming you're talking about the Xserve, this might suggest some sort of a hardware problem.

When you moved Retrospect 6.1 from the G4 to the Xserve, did you copy over the Retro.Config file (located at /Library/Preferences/Retrospect)? If so, that file may be corrupt. Unfortunately, this file contains all your scripts, lists, and custom selectors, so if it is corrupt, you would have to reconstruct everything by hand.

As Russ notes, Retrospect 6.1 is broken under Snow Leopard. Some users claim to be able to make it work, but I don't believe any of them has ever confirmed to this list that they were successfully able to back up and restore files. Your best bet is probably to try and figure out how to make Retrospect 8 work in your system.

Yes I did copy that file over as the sets are pretty huge (over 10TB) and as a small photographic business we aren't at the stage where we can put another tape drive into the library or stop work long enough to have that data copy and verify without modifying at least some of it.

Back to the issue, we have three backup sets that run to tape. One of them works consistantly all of the time. One works half of the time and one works very rarely. As I mentioned this issue is unchanged since running retrospect on 10.3 server.

I understand that there is no support for snow leopard and agree that we need to get retrospect 8 running with a second drive installed and get everything running properly. Unfortunately the EMC engineers and support can't seem to work out why we can log retrospect 6 but can't log retrospect 8 into our ubuntu server to backup the attached RAID (they've been trying for 3 months now) but that's another topic.
