slow client machines

We are having problems with client machines needing to reboot to restore their normal operating speeds following backup by retrospect. I have reset the client machines to full user priority, but I don't think that is where the problem lies. The problem occurs after the server has backed up the files on the client machine. The server is backing up to its internal hard drive and has more than enough available memory. We are using windows 98 or 2000 on both server and all client machines. We get the normal retrospect message saying that backup is successful, with no errors. Backups are being done from a script and are recycled backups for all machines daily with a weekly backup to both the server hard drive and the server tape drive. All script executions appear to be working correctly. The problem is that following backup the client machine slows to a snails pace, requiring either the server or the client to be rebooted in order to restore normal operational speed. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is likely to cause such a problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
