Grooming question -- does the backup "fill the gaps"

So yesterday, I groomed all the backups of one of my servers out of my "Servers" backup set.

When I looked at the actual list of .rdb files, I see that

AA000000.rdb through ...01.rdb are dated March 23

then 4 & 5 are dated April 2 (when I might have run a test groom)

then 6 & 7 are also dated March 23

and variations of that theme.

Am I correct in assuming that if a groom was to remove an entire "600 MB" file, that the next backup of whatever will take it's place so there are no "gaps" in numbering?

Or should there be gaps and when a 600M file is "groomed" -- it's gone for good?

The reason I ask is the last file in the folder has the number "982", but there are only 814 files in the folder (I'd have to sit to figure out where the gaps actually are...)

Just curious...
