An option to stop/start/restart the engine.

You mean from a remote console machine?

If the Retrospect application sent a command to the engine machine to kill retroengine, how would the Retrospect application then be able to communicate with the machine to start it again?

So instead of asking the developers to come up with some dedicated method to start and stop processes on a remote machine, just use the way unix admins have been doing it for years, via an ssh connection to the machine.
