-641 (chunk checksum didn't match) during recatlaog

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a "-641 (chunk checksum didn't match)" error when I recatalog. This set had contained two 1.5TB disks. The first drive failed and I recatalogged to mark those files missing. Everything was working fine for quite a while. A few days ago I got this

-	3/9/2009 6:55:39 PM: Copying RAID5 (E:) on ARAD
Trouble matching RAID5 (E:) on ARAD to Blue, error -641 (chunk checksum didn't match)
3/9/2009 7:02:01 PM: Execution incomplete
Total performance: 69.0 MB/minute with 75% compression
Total duration: 00:16:52 (00:13:23 idle/loading/preparing)
Location of backup report is D:\Retrospect\Logs\.

I read various KB articles and decided to recatalog. The recatalog failed, so I ran chkdsk three times (once with surface scan, and twice without) on the drive with the data and the drive with the catalog. No errors. Now when I try to recatalog I get this

+	Executing Recatalog at 3/13/2009 4:10 PM (Execution unit 2)
To Backup Set Blue...
The Disk Backup Set data files "AA000000.rdb" to "AA005805.rdb" reported missing by user
Can't load Snapshot tree, error -641 (chunk checksum didn't match)
3/13/2009 5:25:29 PM: Execution incomplete
	Completed: 60461 files, 90.1 GB
	Performance: 0.0 MB/minute
	Duration: 01:05:31 (00:01:32 idle/loading/preparing)

Now what?

TIA,

Dan

It is getting worse. My other backup set started giving the same error. Since it could be a controller/cables issue I switched controller and cables, then did my three fsck routine.

I got this from my recatalog of the other set.

To Backup Set Red...

The locked preference on the Snapshots is not preserved after a recatalog.
Please review the Snapshots in the Backup Set and make appropriate changes.

When I look at the contents of either recataloged I only see the first couple weeks of snapshots. I am missing the last four months of data. Oddly I have about the same period/data in both recataloged sets. This doesn't make sense to me; here are the results of the two catalog operations.

	3/13/2009 5:25:29 PM: Execution incomplete
	Completed: 60461 files, 90.1 GB
	Performance: 0.0 MB/minute

The catalog files were also very different in size.

Since I need to get something going, I formatted the "Blue" drive and started a new storage set with the same name.

How do I recover the rest of the contents of the Red set? That is over 1.5TB of storage set I would rather not lose.
