griff
I have Restrospect Multiserver for Windows version 7.5.387 with driver and update hotfix 7.5.11.100 The OS is Windows XP 2002 Pro with SP 2 and all the latest critical updates. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX620 with 2 GB of RAM and 145 out 242 GB free. The SCSI card is an Adaptec AHA-2940U2W UltraII with driver 5.1.2600.2180. The SCSI card firmware is <I have not checked this yet> The backup device is an external SCSI Sony SDX-700V tape drive. The computer has the latest Sony driver for the tape drive 3.0.0.1 The tape drive came with the latest firmware, 0200. The errors occur on brand new tapes as well as older tapes. The new drive was purchased to replace an older one that was also throwing -206 errors, I now suspect that the old tape drive is fine. Any ideas? jda11560
Check all (and I do mean all) your data cables, IDE, SATA, SCSI for integrity. I was receiving error -206, being reported on a ATAPI DVRW, and SCSI Travan NS. (..and occasionally, the second HDD would suddenly disappear). The problem was a faulty IDE cable on IDE 1 (which is the first/main Boot Device), the fault was in the wiring of Slave. I recommend reduce your peripherals to a minimum, and, if error -206 has disappeared, add peripherals and cables back one at a time, until error -206 re-appears (which should point you to problem). Note that error -206 can be broadcast throughout your System, affecting (supposedly) unrelated Hardware. Tracing the fault is a process of trial and error and finally, elimination. The problem is usually a faulty data cable, or loose/bad connection. P.S. You cannot (normally) know a data cable is faulty just by looking.
