Doesn't recognize d drive

I downloaded the trial version of Retrospect Express to my IBM Thinkpad Model T-23, which has a CD-ROM RW device installed in the D drive. I inserted a formatted 650mb CD-RW and tried to back up my files and got the following message: "Retrospect cannot use: Teac CD-RW, ID 1:0 because it does not have a drive letter assigned. To use the drive, quit and relaunch Retrospect after you assign a drive letter to your drive." I phoned IBM tech support and they told me that if the drive letter (d) displays under My Computer (which it does) then the drive is working. Why isn't Retrospect recognizing it? Thank you for your help
