error -1101 and -1102

I am running Retrospect version 7.5.324 with Driver Update and Hot Fix, version 7.5.9.102.

Recently, I moved the contents of "My Music" and "My Pictures" from within "My Documents" to another disk within the same computer. I am attempting to backup these files to a disk on another computer in my local area network.

The network connection seems to be fine, and I am having no trouble writing data to the other computer's disk.

After each of several files Retrospect tries to backup I see the following error message:

"can't read, error -1101 (file/directory not found)"

...and then it aborts with this message:

"Trouble reading files, error -1102 (drive missing/unavailable)"

At first I thought this might have something to do with copy protection on my iTunes files, so I tried running the backup on only the "My Pictures" data, which are mostly simple JPEGs.

I received the same error experience, albeit with different file names.

Within the software using these files, there appear to be no problems using them. Picassa2 has no trouble with the pictures, and iTunes has no trouble playing the music. Windows CHKDSK and Norton Disk Doctor are unable to detect any errors on the drive, and Windows file copy works without error going from the source volume to the destination volume.

I have scoured the forum for information on this and came up with a few posts, but nothing that I was able to find seemed to address my situation. The complete error logs of two of my multiple attempts at making these backups are included here below.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

  • 2 weeks later...

Since no one responded to my original post, I called EMC Support and pleaded my case for help, believing this to be a potential software defect.

The technical diagnose was that the error messages were being generated in response to Windows errors. Although the exact nature of the problem is still undiagnosed, I am pleased to report that EMC was able to provide a work-around:

Turn off the "Open Files Backup" option.

Good luck!

Rich N.
