johnlahovski
Retrospect Ver = 5.6.127 on Windows 98SE Dell Powervault 120T DDS-4 Hangs on error 1020 Our Script completes each night. We back up 20 clients. [a mix of 98 and 2K] Every night the script will hang one or two times. The "hang" is: Always on a Win2K client Always on an error 1020 Usually for almost exactly 2 hours, sometimes less. The script then continues and finishes two hours late. Is there a setting that will insure that the script will immediately continue when it hits an error 1020 (sharing violation)? I know that this could be solved by logging off these workstations. That is not an option. I am considering using the Windows "Path" selector as a workaround to exclude these these specific files. They never get backed up anway because they are in use. Any Ideas, Thank You
AmyJ
Retrospect should never hang up the entire backup based on a sharing violation. The error should get logged and the backup should proceed. How are you determining that the error is holding up the backup for ~2 hours? Can you cut and paste the section of your log that outlines a backup for this client (not the entire session of all clients - just one in particular) from start to finish? johnlahovski
Here are log exerpts illustrating this type of hang: Backing up client without Hang: - 10/08/2002 2:31:06 AM: Copying Administrator on KEITHM 10/08/2002 2:31:06 AM: Connected to KEITHM File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\NTUSER.DAT": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ntuser.dat.LOG": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) 10/08/2002 2:35:14 AM: Snapshot stored, 749 KB 10/08/2002 2:35:18 AM: 4 execution errors Remaining: 4 files, 1,338 KB Completed: 4714 files, 536.7 MB Performance: 141.8 MB/minute Duration: 00:04:09 (00:00:20 idle/loading/preparing) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Backing up client with Hang: - 10/09/2002 2:36:05 AM: Copying Administrator on KEITHM 10/09/2002 2:36:05 AM: Connected to KEITHM File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\NTUSER.DAT": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ntuser.dat.LOG": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation) 10/09/2002 4:25:18 AM: Snapshot stored, 750 KB 10/09/2002 4:25:22 AM: 4 execution errors Remaining: 4 files, 1,338 KB Completed: 4723 files, 536.8 MB Performance: 134.1 MB/minute Duration: 00:04:17 (00:00:15 idle/loading/preparing) I have pasted here two exerpts from our log. The first one shows the client being backed up in 4 minutes and 9 seconds. The second one shows the client being backed up in 4 minutes and 17 seconds. Note the hour and fifty minute hang during the second log entry Always on a Win2K client [not just this client] Always on an error 1020 Thanks for your help AmyC and any others who may have come across this one before. AmyJ
The 1020 error is consistent across both backups and should not be the variable that is making the backup hang. Try: - Clean install of client (uninstall / reboot / reinstall). Make sure to use the latest version of the client software from Updatescolor=blue> If a clean install doesn't resolve the issue, for testing purposes, try: 1) Mark the 1020 error files as private through the Retrospect client (Access tab). Does the hang occur? 2) Try a "no-files" backup of the client. When setting up the backup, under Selecting, change from All Files to No Files. Then go to Configure > Backup Sets. Get Properties on your backup set. On the snapshots tab, select the latest snapshot of this client and right click to get properties. Does the properties box indicate that the registry is included?
