lcra
Be warned, I’m new to this forum. But I did not want to leave anything out. It’s not as wordy as it looks. I am posting this message because doing a search came up with nothing in both the knowledge base and the forum. Secondly customer service could not help and why pay more money than we need to. So we would appreciate any assistance we can get with our problem. Though we have not made any changes to our OS or Applications, something is causing the Retrospect to not work properly. The Facts: We run Win2k 5.00.2195 SP2 Retrospect V.5.5.158 Workgroup Edition Back up to a Sony Dat DDS-DC And if it matters, we run Retrospect Exchange Agent. That back-ups to a different drive though. I do not know what version it is but it was installed in Nov. of 2001. The daily routine for us goes something like this: We will begin with Monday. (Retrospect is always on by the way). The tape from Friday is removed through devices. I place Mondays tape in and verify it shows up. The automated script then takes over in the evening. Our last know successful run looked like this: + Recycle backup using Monday at 6/17/2002 10:00 PM To backup set Monday 1... 6/17/2002 10:00:15 PM: Recycle backup: The backup set was reset - 6/17/2002 10:00:15 PM: Copying Jobs on Data (F:) 6/18/2002 1:19:11 AM: Snapshot stored, 30.0 MB 6/18/2002 1:19:42 AM: Comparing Jobs on Data (F:) 6/18/2002 4:32:55 AM: Execution completed successfully Completed: 66215 files, 15.4 GB Performance: 81.7 MB/minute (81.6 copy, 81.8 compare) Duration: 06:32:40 (00:08:33 idle/loading/preparing) - 6/18/2002 4:32:56 AM: Copying Admin on Data (F:) 6/18/2002 4:36:08 AM: Snapshot stored, 1,926 KB 6/18/2002 4:36:15 AM: Comparing Admin on Data (F:) 6/18/2002 4:39:20 AM: Execution completed successfully Completed: 2576 files, 124.3 MB Performance: 47.4 MB/minute (50.3 copy, 45.1 compare) Duration: 00:06:24 (00:01:09 idle/loading/preparing) 6/18/2002 4:39:21 AM: Execution completed successfully Total performance: 81.2 MB/minute Total duration: 06:39:04 (00:09:43 idle/loading/preparing) The following day in the morning we go to the server and we see the message “Execution completed successfully” Tape is still in the tape drive and we start the whole thing over again with Tuesday tape. We have a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday tape. There are 5 tapes for each Friday of the month. Then we have 4 quarterly tapes. And we only started using the tapes less than a year now. So the tapes are relatively new. But now the problem: In the morning when we go back to the server, the tape drive has ejected the tape. And the new message we get is “Execution incomplete” with that blue progress bar at the half waypoint. The log reads as followed: + Retrospect version 5.5.158 Automatically launched at 6/25/2002 10:00 PM + Retrospect Driver Update, version 2.2.104 + Recycle backup using Tuesday at 6/25/2002 10:00 PM To backup set Tuesday 1... 6/25/2002 10:00:33 PM: Recycle backup: The backup set was reset - 6/25/2002 10:00:33 PM: Copying Jobs on Data (F:) Media request timeout after waiting 1:39:00 6/26/2002 2:54:56 AM: Execution incomplete Remaining: 700 files, 312.5 MB Completed: 68661 files, 15.5 GB Performance: 82.2 MB/minute Duration: 04:54:22 (01:41:39 idle/loading/preparing) 6/26/2002 2:54:56 AM: Execution incomplete Total duration: 04:54:22 (01:41:39 idle/loading/preparing) The first time this happened, we thought it might just be that one tape. So we continued the normal routine with the other tapes. No successful backups since. So, what do you think?
AmyJ
+ Recycle backup using Tuesday at 6/25/2002 10:00 PM To backup set Tuesday 1... 6/25/2002 10:00:33 PM: Recycle backup: The backup set was reset - 6/25/2002 10:00:33 PM: Copying Jobs on Data (F:) Media request timeout after waiting 1:39:00 6/26/2002 2:54:56 AM: Execution incomplete Remaining: 700 files, 312.5 MB Completed: 68661 files, 15.5 GB Performance: 82.2 MB/minute Duration: 04:54:22 (01:41:39 idle/loading/preparing) --- It sounds like the tape is filling up and Retrospect is timing out waiting for a new tape. The first member is able to backup 68661 files, 15.5 GB to the first tape, and then you get Media request timeout after waiting 1:39:00. This means that Retrospect was waiting for a second tape that was never inserted, the operation timed out, and Retrospect quit. You can turn off the Media Request Timeout under Special > Preferences > Media Request. In the morning, I expect you'll see a box with the following text, "Please insert a new tape, it will be named..." Try getting properties on your backup sets (Configure > Backup Sets > Properties). Does the summary tab indicate, "Appending requires another member?" If so, the tape is full. lcra
Every thing you wrote is right on target. My next step seems to be some house cleaning of our files, check the max capacity of our tapes, and come up with a new strategy to make it all work. Thanks Amy!
