New Server and Upgrade from v.8 to v.9

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We had Retrospect v.8 on our old OSX Server 10.4.11 machine last year and was backing up the server and about 5 clients for a month or two. But besides it being so painfully slow to interact with that it was barely usable, it began to crash our server upon backing up at night. So we had to stop backing up.

We now have a new Mac Mini running Lion Server and a license for Retrospect v.9 (we just downloaded v.9.0.2 (107) - is this latest?). But before we install Retrospect we want to know the best way to go about it.

A) Are there instructions/tutorial for migrating from one server to another and/or upgrading?

B) If not, can someone outline the basic steps if we want to bring our v.8 settings & catalogs over from the other machine and then upgrade so we can keep as much as possible? Due to space, we would love to not have to re-backup the entire file drive again, and getting Retrospect fully setup took a while too.

C) Is the latest update to v.9 pretty stable and bug-free to use for a while, or would we be better served to upgrade to v.10 and skip v.9 altogether?

Thanks. We purchased the new server mostly for the sake of being able to backup again, so we really want this to go smoothly!

Kenny

Retrospect 8, 9, and 10 all use the same configuration file, which contains all your source lists, scripts, and settings. It's called "Config80.dat" and it's located at /Library/Application Support/Retrospect. This Retrospect folder is also the default location for your catalogs, operations log, and public/private client keypairs, if you created them. You should be able to copy all of these files over to your new computer. Instructions on how to do this can be found beginning on page 238 of the User's Guide under "Moving Retrospect."

There are a few issues some people have been having with the initial release of Retrospect 10. Though we haven't experienced those issues, you may want to stick with 9.0.2 if it works well for you until the updated version of Retrospect 10 is released.

Great, thanks for the tip. I downloaded the manual and looked up what you are suggesting.

The instructions assume that you already have Retrospect installed on the new computer and that you are overriding the files with what you bring from the old computer.

A) Should I do a basic install of Retrospect 9 with no setup first on new computer, then copy the files over??

B) Should I create the directories and move the files first, then install Retrospect 9 so it tries to 'upgrade' the 'install'?

or

C) Should I install Retrospect 8 on the new computer, copy files over, then install v.9 as an upgrade??

Thanks. Just want to do it right the first time.
