twickland
I just upgraded to 8.2 Retrospect. My tape drive used to work. The tape drive appears in the system profiler. How does one fix this problem? What hardware are you using (computer, SCSI HBA card, tape drive) and what OS are you running? Are you using the latest HBA driver and firmware for your devices? In the proces of upgrading, did you move or swap any SCSI cables? When you say the tape drive used to work, do you mean under Retrospect 6 or was it some other software? While I expect you're seeing a hardware problem, it's also the case that Retrospect 8.2 is definitely not yet as polished as Retrospect 6.x was in its handling of SCSI tape devices. We use an HP LTO-3 drive, and while Retrospect handles reads and writes just fine, it occasionally chokes when we try to eject a tape, either with the button on the drive or through the Retrospect console. Under these circumstances, Retrospect may try to rescan the tape before it ejects, sometimes thinks a tape is still in the drive even after it's been ejected, and sometimes ends up in a limbo where it simultaneously says the drive is unloaded while displaying the name of the tape member that used to be in there. The latter condition is especially dangerous as it may persist even after a different media set member has been inserted, and which, if left uncorrected, causes Retrospect to write to one media set while listing the backed-up files in the catalog of another media set. We've reported this bug and hope it will be fixed in the next version of Retrospect, should that version ever appear. In the meantime, we watch Retrospect's tape handling very closely. e15a2d3e-e37b-4f60-822d-e9e6df4c1bb2
Thanks for the reply. I used to have retrospect 6.1 on powermac g4. Worked pretty good but the drive crashed so I moved everything over to a powermac g5. it worked with retrospect 6.1 and retrospect 8.1 . I was not able to ever get a good 3 tape backup (approx 100 gb) with 8.1. I upgraded to 8.2 and now it will not recognize the tape drive. I have: Powermac g5 Atto SCSCI Controller: ExpressPCI UL3d (firmware is the last one released) HP DLT 8000 tape drive I did not swap any cables during the upgrade. I know to watch the tapes closely but at this point I would like to get it going again. I guess I need to see if I can upgrade the firmware in the tape drive. e15a2d3e-e37b-4f60-822d-e9e6df4c1bb2
I have another DLT 8000 that I attached. It recognized that. I am trying another backup with this drive. If this work, then it looks like the original tape drive was the issue. I may need to upgrade the firmware on it.
