Choosing A Subvolume As A Backup Source

Recommended Posts

This used to be easy in Retrospect 6. How do you do it in 8? We want to back up only the users' folders on our network, not their entire HDs. But for most of the client machines shown under the sources section, the ability to browse through the HD and choose those folders is grayed out. Any ideas?

The Subvolume feature of Retro 6 was versatile and easy to use. Its replacement in Retro 8, Favorite Folders, is somewhat less convenient, both in setup and in use.

You need to highlight the desired source volume, not the client name, in the Sources window; then click on the Add Favorites icon in the toolbar. There will be a delay as the Retrospect Engine connects with the source, but you should then be able to browse through the source and check the box for the folders you wish to add. Unfortunately, you need to drill down the directory folder by folder. There is no quick way to open multiple folders in Retro 8, and it seems to take as long for each folder to open as it did to access the source.

If you used Source Groups in Retro 6, its replacement in Retro 8 is the less-satisfactory Tags option (less satisfactory in that there is no convenient way to view all the sources that have a particular tag selected).

If you used to select the subvolumes in the client windows, there is no replacement for this feature in Retro 8, which only shows the root volumes for each client and not any favorite folders you may have created.
