Long Delay in Recycle Backup

Recommended Posts

Using Retrospect 4.3 - OS 9.2.1 on a G4 File Server, we do a daily recycle backup that works almost flawlessly. Twice now in the last three months, the backup admin has turned the server on to see the backup from several days past still trying to run. Here is what the log says:

+ Recycle Backup using Thursday 2001 at 5/9/2002 10:00pm

To Backup set Thursday 2001...

5/9/2002 10:00:11 PM: Recycle Backup: the backup set was reset

- 5/9/2002 10:00:11 PM: Copying •Sharing• on Server

5/14/2002 3:33:26 PM: Execution stopped by operator

Remaining 46793 files, 9.1 GB

Completed: 0 files, zero KB

Performance: 0.0 MB/minute

Duration: 113:33:15 Idle/loading/preparing)

No error message - just never did a backup.

Any ideas? Many thanks!

Your log entry indicates that this backup was 'stopped by operator' 5 days after it began, with no files copied.

When this happens, there should be a dialog box on the screen indicating what Retrospect is doing and/or what Retrospect is asking for. In my experience, there is usually a media request box on the screen when this happens: Retrospect is asking for a particular piece of media that it is not detecting in the drive. Please provide information as to exactly what is on the screen before the operation is stopped.

If Retrospect is asking for a particular tape, check to make sure the correct tape is in the drive. If Retrospect is asking for a new tape (2-xxx), this would indicate that the current tape is full and Retrospect requires another tape to complete the operation.

Feature request: Log this too - the dialog (and response) should also be put into the log.

This is a problem with Internet (ftp) backups as well, since those errors are not logged either.

Thanks,

Marc
