Errors, errors, why no successful backup ever?

Recommended Posts

Retrospect Desktop 6.0.204 on OSX 10.3.8; trying to backup Client on XP Professional SP2. Regcopy running.

Since I bought the new Dell 3 months ago I haven't achieved a single error-free 'Sucessful' backup of this machine. Mostly there are many errors of the -49 (file busy) variety. When I needed to do a restore last week the restore also generated similar errors and although it fixed some immedtae problems the Dell was still left with other problems even if I went back to the earliest snapshot when there had been no evident problems with the Dell. So I'm presuming that this is becuase of the errors in the backups.

I ended up re-installing everything on the Dell (nice weekend); XP, McAfee; Office etc. Did all the Windows updates. Then created a new Retrospect backup set and tried for an error-free backup of this virgin setup. Biggest error count so ever, this time all -43 file not found. Log posted below, sorry if this is too much info.

What can be causing all this?

By the way the success of my Mac backups (of the Mac running Retrospect Desktop and a Mac running Client) is also somewhat unpredictable; sometimes I get no errors but sometimes a fair number of errors which are usually different data size or different creation date/time - usually the file is some log file so I don't worry too much. But I'd love to know how to always get an error-free backup. I've tried doing a restart of the machine before the backup, turning off antivirus etc but I can't pin down what makes the difference between a success result and an error result.

Advice would be much appreciated.

I still need help with this but it doesn't much look like this forum is the place to get it; probably I'm not alone in thinking this judging by the number of other posters who don't get any replies. If my post is being ignored because I should have been ableI to find the answer myself in the support areas then I'll be glad of a pointer or two. I have looked but I can't find anything useful.

If there are not enough expert helpers available on this forum then Dantz should be thinking about ways of addressing this; why should I have to get paid support for a problem which seems to me is raising questions about the reliability of my Retrospect backups and Restrospect does not provide any information on the seriousness of these error reports?

For what it's worth, a subsequent backup of the XP machine has a much reduced error list, all 'file busy' and to do with various MSSQL files. Since I can't prevent the operating system from doing what it does, what am I supposed to make of these errors - do they affect the validity of my backup or not? Backup log pasted below.

Thanks in anticipation (cough)....

Well, I'm not sure since I'm a Mac person, and you're posting this to a Mac forum, yet seem to be talking about a failed Windows backup. Anyway my modestly informed guess would be that "file busy" means just that - you need to shut down your database server so it closes the files before they can be backed up. But hey, maybe the file is just busy getting infected with a virus or something wink.gif

Hi Gorbag

I'm a Mac person too but I need to run a PC as well for work reasons. I posted on the Mac forum because I'm using Retrospect on my Mac to back up the XP machine as a client.

I doubt that there is any way I can stop the MSSQL stuff from running because I'd guess it's an integral part of XP and the way the operating system functions. I gather from searching the forum that the Windows version of Retrospect (which I don't have) has the ability to back up open files; the Mac 5.x versions can't do this. I use version 6 but I can't find anything to say whether this was fixed with this version but it would seem not.

So the nub of my question is whether not backing up these MSSQL open files in particular or other open files in general has a serious affect on the validity of the backup. Or to put it another way, since the Windows Client of Retrospect for Mac can't back up these files, and if this problem has a serious impact, then Dantz is mis-representing the ability of Retrospect for Mac to back up an XP client. I just wish I could get an answer on this issue.

As for the 90-odd 'file not found' errors in the first backup, I have no idea about what these Win files are, or whether these errors are unusual or not; or whether I should worry. What I do worry about is that it's hard to get any answers to these questions.

I'm shocked to learn from your suggestion that I might get a virus on my XP machine. I thought it was just that with Win machines various things stop working after a while for no particular reason so you have to re-install them. Unless you've got a backup system that you can rely on.

Regards

sometimes I get no errors but sometimes a fair number of errors which are usually different data size or different creation date/time - usually the file is some log file so I don't worry too much. But I'd love to know how to always get an error-free backup.

Mac OS X is a busy, busy multi-tasking OS. Lots of processes are running all the time, and many of these processes write to log files. Those files, then, will change between the time that Retrosect scans the Source, and the time Retrospect goes back and compares the files its written to what it saw during its earlier scan.

Entries in Retrospect's Operations Log that describe changed files are normal. Yes, they're called "errors." But the only way to assure that none will occur would be to either kill all other processes that might be writing log, temp or cache files (not a realistic choice) or boot from a different volume then what you use as a Source.

>Can't read file “148MCA00.EXE-1E6EB139.pf”, error -43 (file/folder not found), path: “C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\148MCA00.EXE-1E6EB139.pf”.

Well, _is_ this file present?

If Retrospect encountered a file system entry for a file during it's initial scan, but for whatever reason the file is no longer present when Retrospect attempts to write to it (which could be many minutes later) then the error would be perfectly normal.

What does the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\ directory usually contain?

Thanks for your reply. Pardon me if my use of quoting isn't working - I'll figure it out another time else I'll be here all day.

I recognise this and it doesn't bother me when the changing files are of logs and so on; but given that the OS is so busy, how come there are times when I get a 'successful' backup (no 'errors' at all)? Dang lazy OS doing nothing at all - seems unlikely? This is the nub of the desire I expressed in my original post - to be able to figure out what induces this happy state of inactivity in the OS so that I can have the comfort of the 'successful' word from Retrospect.

Dave, I haven't the foggiest clue what's normally in that directory, or why Retrospect might find 90-odd similar files at the beginning of its backup and none by the end of it.

Maybe it was something to do with the fact that I had done a complete re-install of XP plus all the Windows Updates and perhaps these are files which are used only during these processes: maybe the evil XP kept the files until I was doing a Restrosepct backup, then deleted the files halway through the backup just to confuse and annoy me? Well OK, I'd almost be prepared to believe this, after all it's Win.

But maybe it's more likely that after the install/update processes XP has somewhere retained a reference to these files which it used during the install/update, but then deleted the actual files - and for some reason Retrospect is reading these referencecs and expecting to find a corresponding file but of course it doesn't?

Clearly this is wild speculation on my part: to actually know I'd have to be a Win expert with a deep understanding of its workings. Now I would guess that Dantz must have such experts else how could it make it's software; and that's why I hoped that someone here would supply an answer.

Longwinded or what? Sorry, that's what I'm like.

Regards
