Carillon
Yeah that would suck but right now it sucks even more because I can't get a backup of this share like I used to be able to. I'm going to try backing up another share from my MacServe and see how Retrospect does with that.
Carillon
Okay, other network shares backup just fine. So is it possible for me to manually mount the share on my desktop and have Retrospect back it up?
rhwalker
Are the other network shares also on the Xinet Unix box? I'm trying to figure out what is different about the Xinet share that doesn't work.
CallMeDave
is it possible for me to manually mount the share on my desktop and have Retrospect back it up? Perhaps if you log into WindowServer as root, the engine might see the volume mounted manually from Finder.app as if it were locally attached. Or it might not. My money is on the latter. But if the issue is with the sharing protocol itself (and how this build interacts with it), it likely wouldn't make any difference (although worth the test, methinks). If this can be regressed to a previous version (where it works) and then reproduced in the current version (where it fails) then you have identified a software defect (bug). Jumping through hoops rarely gets you around actual defects. Dave
Carillon
I tried a different Xinet share from the same Unix server and here's what I get. + Recycle backup using AdMan Backup at 11/2/2009 10:13 AM (Execution unit 2) To Media Set AdMan Backup... 11/2/2009 10:13:48 AM: Recycle backup: The Media Set was reset - 11/2/2009 10:13:48 AM: Copying PDFDrop MapError: unknown Mac error -5000 > *File "/Volumes/PDFDrop/.DS_Store": can't read, error -1002 ( unknown Mac OS error) 11/2/2009 10:13:59 AM: Snapshot stored, 82 KB 11/2/2009 10:14:00 AM: 1 execution errors Remaining: 1 files, 7 KB Completed: 29 files, 140.7 MB Performance: 937.6 MB/minute Duration: 00:00:11 (00:00:01 idle/loading/preparing)
rhwalker
From the name of the share, I wonder if that is a "drop box" with write-only ACLs that prevent Retrospect from reading it. Any ACLs on that share?
Carillon
I added that share using admin credential so I can read/write to that share using that login. No ACLs.
rhwalker
Ok. What credentials are used by Retrospect engine? Note that your earlier posts regarding this issue seem to imply that the credentials being used by Retrospect engine are different from those being used by the Retrospect console, because Retrospect console can browse the share, but Retrospect engine can't back up the share. Carillon
Whenever I start/stop the Retrospect engine I use a local admin account that is on my Mac. When I add the Xinet share as a source I use an admin account that exists on the Unix server.
rhwalker
Ok. I really suggest that you follow up with EMC Retrospect support on this with a support call because they might be able to figure out a workaround or else come up with a minimal test case that they can reproduce at their end so that the apparent bug (?) can be fixed.
