Unable to run Mac client

Recommended Posts

I'm running Retrospect Professional 8.2 backing up the Windows machine that Retrospect runs on and several clients. Including Mac Book running the 10.2.0.201 client and the Mountain Lion OS.

The MacBook frequently fails on a backup with "Client Not Found".

When this happens, going to the MacBook shows the retrospect client is Off, but the On button is disabled. Nothing happens when it is clicked.

Rebooting the machine usually does not fix the problem. If ti does, then the Macbook will back up for a couple of weeks until the problem starts again.

The problem started when the Macbook was upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Has this been seen elsewhere? Is there a fix?

  Thanks,

The most likely cause is that the Mac firewall is blocking Retrospect

If the Client software is not on, then it's not a communication issue. It means the Client is not on.

going to the MacBook shows the retrospect client is Off, but the On button is disabled

What do you see in the window? Is "Client Name:" showing?

I'm assuming the Lock icon in the lower left is unlocked?

Rebooting the machine usually does not fix the problem

So a restart of the OS X 10.8.x machine running Retrospect Client 10.2.0.201 does not result in the client process running?

What _does_ get it running again? Just multiple reboots?

Is the "retroclient" process running on the machine?
Is there anything helpful in /var/log/retroclient.log ?

Have you uninstalled the client and reinstalled?

Nothing I can find. It ran for a short period after upgrading to Mountain Lion and installing the latest client, stopped, and hasn't started.

> Is the "retroclient" process running?

  No

> Is there anything helpful in /var/log/retrospectclient.log

It says "spsload: no public, return -1". I don't know if that is helpful.

> Have you unistalled...

Yes. It made no difference. Same message in the log file.

I would try un-installing again however before re-installing removing the client state file.  I am not sure where the file lives but you can try looking for it.  This file tells Retrospect what state the client is in and if not removed after un-installation the new installation will revert to the info in this file.
