proland
Been using Retrospect 7.0 on Windows XP SP2 for quite sometime now, without problems. I run incremental open file backups. However, all of a sudden, when doing a backup, first I get a 1017 permission denied error, followed by hundreds of 1020 sharing violation errors. The sharing violation files are indeed in use, but this has never caused problems before. I am running with administrator rights. Any ideas why I'm getting these errors all of a sudden? waltr
hi pro, sounds like your VSS Service might be broken. any errors in your Event Viewer?
proland
Very good catch, at the time of the errors, I had some VSS erros in my event viewer, the first one as follows: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(00000268,0x0053c010,00039AC0,0,00038AB8,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070057. Then: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be held during the shadow copy creation period on volume \\?\Volume{11fd656e-01bd-11d9-bdd5-806d6172696f}\. The volume index in the shadow copy set is 0. Error details: Flush[0x00000000], Release[0x8000ffff], OnRun[0x00000000]. Doesn't tell me much due to my limited understanding of VSS. I had subsequent problems with my backup drive getting full (at some point I accidentally turned on system restore on that volume), so I ended up reformating my backup drive, rebooting, then redoing my backup, and no longer got the 1017 and 1020 errors, so life is good once again. Thanks for your help, at least I have a direction in which to investigate. Thanks!!!!
lafong
I finally solved our -1017 and -1020 errors. Our problem involved a faulty Visio unistall routine which left a stale Registry key and also required re-registering VSS and COM+ DLLs. I've posted our fix separately in a new thread "Solved our -1020 and 1017 errors". May help, though your errors look slightly different.
