Catalog saved to wrong location - can I move it?

Recommended Posts

I recently upgraded to Retrospect Desktop 6.0, and started new backups of the 3 Macs in my office (all are backed up to DVD-R). Apparently I made an error in configuring the script for one of these, because the catalog file was saved to the wrong location. Can I move it to the folder where I keep the rest of my catalog files? If I do that, how do I inform Retrospect that the location has been changed? I could not find anything in the Dantz support docs about how to deal with this situation.

My best guess would be to do the following:

1) Bring up the Backup Sets window (main window > Backup Sets button).

2) Select the mislocated Backup Set, and click the Forget button.

3) Use Finder to move the catalog file to the correct location.

4) Go back to Backup Sets window, click More button, click Open, and select the moved catalog to reinstall it in the list of backup sets.

5) Re-edit my script, removing the backup set and adding it again, to ensure that it knows about the changed location.

Will this work? Perhaps I should mention that the catalog was saved to a volume other than the one being backed up. The correct location is on the volume being backed up.

Retrospect handles moving the catalog file fine. After you have moved the file there are two ways that you can inform Retrospect. Either try and do something with the catalog inside Retrospect and it will prompt you to find the new location, or I think double-clicking on the catalog in the new location will also inform Retrospect of the change.

(If you don't want to delete the file from the incorrect location straight away, at least rename it so you don't get you or Retrospect confused about which one is the real one.)

John, thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestions, but without success. I copied the mislocated catalog to the correct location and renamed the original. When I tried to access the catalog from the "Configure > Backup Sets" window, most of the controls in that window were greyed out (disabled). When I tried to run a backup, Retrospect reported that it "can't add to backup set - the catalog is locked."

Fortunately, the method proposed in my original post worked.
