HP dvd300e DVD +RW problem (error -102)

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I have a Dell 4550 2.4MHz P4 machine, lots of RAM, WinXP SP-1, and an external HP DVD+RW drive (USB) that I, fortunately, backed up the machine with, using Retrospect Professional v.6.5.

Fortunately, because I recently had a hard disk fail mechanically, so I had to reload everything, and the DVD drive has been of immeasurable help.

Now, after I reload the "stuff", I want to do another full backup, with another backup set, and now I'm having problems with Retrospect (all other applications using the DVD +R/W drive operate fine, just as they did for the original backup).

When I try to back up now that everything is reloaded, I'm getting a " trouble communicating error -102" message when it tries to erase the new disk. I've tried old disks, new disks, formatted disks, non-formatted disks, and they are of the same brands that worked fine last fall on this machine (HP and Fuji).

I've tried reloading all the DVD drive software, (several times) and data will store on it just fine through their applications, so it's recognized by the system, and shows up in the SYSTEM as a working device.

I've downloaded and installed the most recent drivers, etc., from here, and from HP (all applications, drivers are from WinXP).

But Retrospect ALWAYS crashes (actually just stalls with the error message, it doesn't lock up, but it won't proceed, just keeps retrying, and failing, even when I try another disk I know is good) after two or three disks in the backup set are written, always with the above message. It's always during the erase phase. (Even with a new disk.)

Any ideas? (Please don't say reload Windows, that's what STARTED this! )

I have far too much "stuff" to use CD-RW to store it. The DVD device worked fine before the disk crash/reload. It restored everything I needed just fine. But I did not have a recent TOTAL backup, so I had to piece it all back together.

I appreciate anything someone can come up with that will get this running.

Pure, unenlightened, guess... check the cooling? Several DVDs on the trot after each other...

best wishes, Robert

Thanks, Robert,

Things do get hot in there. It's an external device, shouldn't be a problem, but I'll look into that. Maybe slow down the pace a bit.

But it did 6 in a row before the disk swap... Hmmmm....

Thanks,

Ron

Hi

In the configure devices window in Retrospect does it say ASPI or NTpassthrough in the top corner? If it says ASPI type CTRL + ALT + P + P and select the box that says use Nt passthrough. If it says NTpasstrhough try installing ASPI using the aspiinst utility located in the Retrospect program folder.
