Problem writing to AIT-1 tapes

Recommended Posts

Retrospect Single Server 6.5.319 on a Dell notebook with Win 98 SE writing to external firewire Sony StorStation AIT-1 drive...the AIT tapes are rated at 90 GB per tape; however, Retrospect only writes half of that and asks for a new tape. Software data compression is on. It is interesting to note that Retrospect also reports only 68 GB available on a new tape, when again it should be 90 GB. Please help!

The tapes are Sony SDX1-35C AIT Data Cartridges, rated at 35GB native, 91GB compressed. Retrospect writes until the tapes reach 45GB, then it asks for a new tape. Also, Retrospect reports 68GB as the full capacity of the tapes, rather than the 91 rated. (In reality, I'd be happy to get 68, but 45 is just not enough given the money I've spent.

Hi

Actually 45 GB is pretty good compression. You will only get the 90 GB promised by the manufacturer if you back up exactly the right data (Huge raw text files only) What I mean is, the results you are seeing are normal and to be expected in a real world backup situation.

By default Retrospect uses the drives built in hardware compression and writes to the physical end of the media. The reported capacity is a guess that Retrospect makes based on media type. It has no bearing on how much the tape can actually hold.
