TheMadCow
I have a client that is running backups on a non-server Mac. That system needs to backup a W2K server (project volume) and associated Mac workstation clients. Has 6.0 addressed the issues that would allow the retro client to be installed on the server and backed up (since it's serving Appletalk Services)? This was an issue with 5.xx and the work around of mounting the volume on the desktop is NOT a good solution. There's all manner of errors generated in trying to back it up this way. Mostly -127 errors. It would be nice to be able to seamlessly backup both Mac & Wintel servers. Thoughts? Solutions? Thanks.
Mayoff
Retrospect 6.0 for mac has not changed how it backs up Windows boxes. Infact Dantz does not recommend using Retrospect for Mac to backup Windows servers. We recommend using Retrospect for Windows to backup Windows servers. TheMadCow
Thank You! The suggestion to duplicate my entire backup infrastructure on the Mac to the PC. Excellent suggestion! The DLT autoloaders, the ATTO LVD cards, THE SOFTWARE... Gee, I've just got money falling out of my... well, you know where it's falling out of. Why, then... IS THERE A WINTEL BACKUP CLIENT? WHY ISN'T THERE SOME PLACE THAT SAYS, "WE DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS?" There's a place in hell for this company...the trouble is. I think you're already there. CallMeDave
Quote: Why, then... IS THERE A WINTEL BACKUP CLIENT? Uh, perhaps to allow the Windows version of Retrospect to connect to (and back up) Windows clients? Perhaps you might ask why then is the Macintosh application able to connect to these same clients? I'd guess it's to allow the Macintosh version of Retrospect to connect to (and backup) Windows Desktop clients. I'm not aware of the specific issue you're referencing; certainly the Retrospect Client software can be installed on Windows2000 Server that's running Microsoft's AppleTalk services. I've done it. And I have, in the past, used the Macintosh version of Retrospect to backup and restore data files stored on such a server. I know that the Macintosh version of Retrospect can't do a system backup of a Win2K server that will allow for disaster recovery of the box, nor can it backup open files such as SQL databases or Exchange mailboxes. But if you're just backing up project files I would have thought that it would work (and I would be interested to see a reference to the issue you've experienced; searching the Dantz knowledge base did not yield anything informative on the subject).
