Not showing up under My Computer

Recommended Posts

Ok, I apologize in advance if there is something I don't understand and that this annoys you :P

I was recently given a Western Digital External Hard Drive with Dual-option Backup, USB 2.0/Firewire, and a USB 2.0 Hub. It has 120 GB of hard drive space.

And if someone can tell me how to find out what it's normal name is, I can give you that :P

The Model Number is WD1200B011-RNN

Well, anyway. I followed the installation instructions, installed the software, and now I am at the step about connection. I believe I have everything hooked up properly, and I pressed the Safe Shutdwn Power Button (as it said to). The install guide then says that I should see an external drive icon named "WD MediaCtr" in the My Computer window thingie. This does not appear.

I am running Windows 2k, and I have all the service packs and the like. I do not have a firewire port, but it said I can just use the USB port.

First see whether the Hub is being listed in device manager with no problems.

I would suspect that this is a Hub problem.

Second, instead of using the Hub, try connecting the WD driove directly to a USB port on your computer. When you do that, does the drive show up in Windows Explorer or device manager? If so, it's a hub set up problem. If not, then you may have a bad drive.

To test this, if yiu have anoter USB device connected to the USB ports on yoour system, connect the drive to the same port. Can you see the drive in device manager? If yes, then it's a hub problem, otherwise a drive problem.
