NTFS and only file option in backup works but no data on drive

Recommended Posts

I have been using Retrospect 5.6.132 and a Maxtor 5000 w/ one touch. I had been doing immediate backup on the FAT32-Maxtor. It worked just fine. I ran into a filesize problem and decided to use NTFS. Now I can't get Retrospect to find the hard drive. I uninstalled and reinstalled but it didn't help. I can get it to work with type-of-media->file option. but after it ran I checked the Maxtor and it was still empty. I tried tape drive, CD-RW, and removeable storage, but the software reported none found.

When reinstalling I initially got an existing device error so I decided to uninstall using the device manager. I reinstalled and did not get an error. As I mentioned the file-restore option works, but it doesn't write any thing to the maxtor. I looked in the KB, and went through all the posts on the forum, but was still unable to find anything useful. There was something about, aspick.exe, and apinst.exe, but I am not sure if this will solve the problem. Thanks.

The most likely cause is that you are not saving the File backup aet on the Maxtor drive. Go to Configure > Backup Sets and get Properties on the File Backup Set. The Summary tab will tell you where you stored the Catalog File (which, in the case of File backup sets, is also the data file). When creating File backup sets they must be stored on the destination drive.

If you would like to use a Disk backup set, you'll need to select the Maxtor drive during the creation process. The second window will have 2 boxes - one for the backup set name and one for the location of the data. Use the "Select" button to choose the Maxtor drive.
