Retrospect not quiting after unattended backup

Recommended Posts

I am running Retrospect 6.0 on a G4 with Mac OS X 10.3.2. I have set Retrospect preferences so that when unattended backups complete, than the system will shut down.

However, Retrospect seems to take a very long time to quit after a backup, and thus I get a system error message that says:

“Log out has timed out because the application Retrospect has failed to quit. To try again, quit Retrospect and choose log out from the Apple menu.”

If I check the “OK” button in the dialogue box, I can then shut the computer down, as Retrospect will eventually quit. However, it seems to take long enough to quit to interfere with the computer shutdown command it issues when it performs an unattended scripted backup.

I would like the computer to shut down by itself when an scripted unattended backup completes. If anyone has an idea of what is causing this, please let me know.

Thanks.

Well there's the problem (most likely). However, we'll need more information in order to work towards a solution.

* What is the make/model of your backup device?

* What is the make/model of your SCSI card (if applicable)?

* If you are backing up to hard drive, is the drive local or on the network?

* Can you discern what Retrospect is doing during the prolonged shutdown? Is it rewinding a tape, for example?

* Do you see the same long shut down if you launch Retrospect and immediately quit?

* Does the long shut down only occur after a backup operation?

Please post any other observations you may have in addtion to answers to the questions.

Thanks for your questions: I've answered them and provided as much additional information as I have at present. Any further testing ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Q: What is the make/model of your backup device?

A: HP Surestore DAT24

Q: What is the make/model of your SCSI card (if applicable)?

A: Apaptec 2930CU

Q: If you are backing up to hard drive, is the drive local or on the network?

A: Backing up to DAT Drive

Q: Can you discern what Retrospect is doing during the prolonged shutdown? Is it rewinding a tape, for example?

A: Retrospect seems to take about 2.5 to 3 minutes to complete quitting after it finishes an unattended backup. After the backup is completed, any errors are shown in in a separate window. Then the little gear windows are turning, while it goes through its quit routine. The quitting takes about 30 to 60 seconds longer than the allowed shutdown period that the OS allows (which is 120 seconds). Therefore, Retrospect finishes quitting about 30 seconds after the OS notifies me that the shutdown has been cancelled.

Q:Do you see the same long shut down if you launch Retrospect and immediately quit?

A:No, in that case it shuts down promptly, however, my unattened backups include 2 disks, with a combined total of over 350,000 files.

Q: Does the long shut down only occur after a backup operation?

A: Yes
