Can't backup "Favorites"?? (Msg -1013)

During the copy phase in Retrospect Backup (to a Maxtor external drive), SEVERAL HUNDRED messages ending in "error -1013 (malformed name)" are displayed in the log. All of the related files are in one of 3 paths, each ending in a "Favorites" directory of one kind or another, so I'm concerned maybe my "Favorites" are not being backed up properly. I also have a concern that I might be missing some other serious message, buried in all this clutter.

I think the filetype of each file is "Internet Shortcut". WHEN I FOLLOW THE INDICATED DIRECTORY PATHS AND CLICK ON ANY OF THE INDICATED FILE NAMES, THE LINKS WORK PERFECTLY FINE (I.E., the browser opens and the expected web page appears), SO WHY DOES RETROSPECT THINK THE NAMES ARE MALFORMED?? Furthermore, I don't have any control over how the files in the Favorites directory are named, so how can I possibly fix this?

Here's an example of a message from each of the 3 paths that end in "Favorites". I believe the first is the actual MSIE (or Earthlink Total Access) Favorites directory. The other two are backups that I created some time ago from old Favorites directories.

File "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Earthlink\6.0\xxxxxx@earthlink.net\Favorites\Financial\free Real estate calculators, free real estate spreadsheets, real estate taxes, Free real estate forms, free mortgage complianc.url": can't write, error -1013 (malformed name)

File "C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Total Access Install Stuff\Earthlink Profile Data from Windows,Application Data,Earthlink\6.0\xxxxxx@earthlink.net\Favorites\FirstGov, the official site for U.S. Government information, services, transactions, and forms.url": can't write, error -1013 (malformed name)

File "C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Total Access Install Stuff\Saved Favs and Email from Earthlink 5.0\xxxxxx@earthlink.net\Favorites\FirstGov, the official site for U.S. Government information, services, transactions, and forms.url": can't write, error -1013 (malformed name)

Tons of other files are successfully copied during the same backup. I've tried unsuccessfully to find help information about -1013. Can you help me with this?

Are you doing a Duplicate or a Backup? Go to Automate > Scripts (or Manage Scripts) to see if the word (Duplicate) is listed behind the Maxtor OneTouch script - or any other script you may be running.

When you do a Duplicate Retrospect is only copying the data from one drive to another. That is to say that if you were to browse the Maxtor drive you will see the files listed in a fashion similar to how they are listed on the C: drive.

Most likely the files are being deposited in the directory Drive Letter:\Retrospect\Backup Copy of Drive C:\ -- or something similar.

In looking at the paths you posted, they are all butting up against a Windows path size limit - which is 250 characters. For example, the following link (as is) contains 215 charaters.

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Total Access Install Stuff\Saved Favs and Email from Earthlink 5.0\xxxxxx@earthlink.net\Favorites\FirstGov, the official site for U.S. Government information, services, transactions, and forms.url

When Retrospect duplicates these files to the Drive Letter:\Retrospect\Backup Copy of Drive C:\ directory the path is now longer then the allowed 250 characters. For example:

Drive Letter:\Retrospect\Backup Copy of Drive C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Total Access Install Stuff\Saved Favs and Email from Earthlink 5.0\xxxxxx@earthlink.net\Favorites\FirstGov, the official site for U.S. Government information, services, transactions, and forms.url

For whatever reason, your favorites are buried pretty deep in the folder structure. To solve this, you can tell Retrospect to duplicate directly to the Maxtor drive, rather then to a folder on the Maxtor drive. Go to Automate > Scripts (or Manage Scripts), edit your script, and change the destination from the folder on the Maxtor drive to the Maxtor drive itself. Or, create a folder on the Maxtor drive with a short name and use that as your destination.

Yes it is a "Duplicate" operation. Yes the target directory is similar to what you said. I think you've identified the problem! I'll attempt your suggested fix, or might try shortening the top directory names where the favorites were stashed (they were intended to be temporary directories anyway, but since some of the favorites did get lost in the move to a new browser, I just left them in that directory. I think the actual favorites accessed by the browser are in the usual directory structure and are probably being saved ok. I'll verify that too. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOU"RE HELP!!!
