Changing client name

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Is it possible to change a client's name? I have a Win98 machine that has a proper hostname but the retrospect client thinks it is a different host name. I went through all settings on the PC and found nothing wrong with it. I would rather fix it then re-install if it is possible...

Does that change the actual name of the client or just the server's view of the name (i.e. an alias)? What will I see if I look at the name directly on on the client? When I'm trying to ID client "SnowWhite" next to PCs "sneezey" "grumpy" and "sleepy" will I be able to reconcile each client with the name seen on the server even after they are "renamed?"

And only allowing the name to be changed from the server doesn't help when PCs are moved around or retasked. What is needed is a way to change the name *at the client* so that the client can be given a meaningful name that makes sense once the admin is back at the server.

Thanks folks,

I don't know how I missed that preference... Frankly I like that I can do that from the server. It saves a 4 floor trip. All in all, This product was WAY easier to set up than Netbackups. I now have 18 clients running Mac OS9, OS10.x, Win98, 2k, Xp, And win2k Advanced with Clustering. I did that in 3 days. I tried this with the Verita$ product last monts and it took 3 weeks!

I tested out doing it from the server (actually I had done it before, but didn't realize it changed it at the client. I thought it was only acting like an alias from the server's perspective) and verified that it worked. And I agree that allowing the change from the server is very convenient. But it *also* needs to be allowed from the client. On many occasions I've moved clients around or had their function changed (e.g. a user PC turned into a file server). Back at the server I can't tell what's what, so I have to go back out to the client PCs and make a was-is list based on the current and new (planned) client names. It would be *much* easier to change the client names as they're moved and set up and then be able to easily know who's who when I get back to the server.

Since all hostnames are tied to their IP's here, I never have that problem. Just lucky I guess. I will always use the hostname as the client name so that it does not get confusing. Othherwise... 460 nodes... change a couple names...Mayhem!

Happy trails and thanks again for the tip.
