I've been getting an Error -53 (volume off-line) error on occasion with both 5.0.201 and 5.0.203. The setup: OS 10.1.2, backing up the local volume to a file backup set. This only seems to happen on the *first* backup to the backup set (just after it is created) and it happens at the point where the verify begins--the writing of the backup set completes successfully, but on the verification of the first file, it dies.

At first I thought this was perhaps a flaky firewire disk containing the backup set, but then I was able to make the same thing happen while writing to a file on the local disk volume. I note that the full message is "Can't initialize source, error -53 (volume off-line)" so I suppose it doesn't have anything to do with the volume containing the backup set.

It does not seem to happen reliably, but it does happen often. I attempted to create a test case, backing up a single file, and it happened once under 5.0.203 but then did not happen again, even after creating a new backup set and restarting Retrospect.

The catalog appears intact after this occurs, and incremental backups proceed swimmingly afterward as well.

I suppose this could be viewed as a feature, as it makes the initial backup take much less time...

Hi,

I'm also getting the Error -53 Volume Off-line error message when I try to backup my main internal hard drive (w/OSX10.1.5) on it. Retrospect did backup my secondary internal drive.

When I looked at my backup set, I saw duplicates of my main hard drive listed, but one was grayed out. I assume I should only see one of each hard drive to be backed up?

How can I straighten this out?

Thanks!

Mark

Highlight the grayed-out hard drive, and, from the volumes menu, select Forget. This will remove it from the Configure > Volumes window. You'll need to go back into your scripts and be sure that they all have the correct source defined in them as well.
