repeatable -36 error not related to disk problems but afp

Recommended Posts

I have run into this problem were I get -36 error restoring files that were copied over afp. This is not a problem with the target disk that I am trying to restore the files to. I tried 4 different disk on two different servers. What I did find was that files that were copied from an osx 10.2.6 clint to an osx 10.1.2 server failed to be restored but files that were copied to a 10.2.6 server could be restored. I found this because I was trying to restore a home directory that the user installed camino which when restored failed with -36 error on four files in the camino package. I then set the following test up using an original downloaded camino disk image which is a drag and drop install.

Machines:

Server1 - G4 dual 800 OSX server 10.1.5 retroserver 50236 retroclient 50540

Server2 - G4 dual 1.42 OSX server 10.2.6 retroserver 50238

client - G4 500 OSX 10.2.6

Download Camino instal image to all three machines.

On Server1 drag app from disk image to test folder

Backup test folder on Server1 to file storage set on Server1 using retro on Server1

Restore test folder to any disk on Server1 with no problems

On Server2 drag app from disk image to test folder

Backup test folder on Server2 to file storage set on Server2 using retro on Server2

Restore test folder to any disk on Server2 with no problems

On Server1 drag app from disk image to test folder

Backup test folder on Server1 to file storage set on Server2 using retro on Server2

Restore test folder to any disk on Server1 or Server2 with no problems

On Client drag app from disk image to test folder on Server1 mounted over AFP

Backup test folder on Server1 to file storage set on Server1 using retro on Server1

Restore test folder to any disk on Server1 with errors

On Client drag app from disk image to test folder on Server1 mounted over AFP

Backup test folder on Server2 to file storage set on Server2 using retro on Server2

Restore test folder to any disk on Server1 or Server2 with errors

On Client drag app from disk image to test folder on Server2 mounted over AFP

Backup test folder on Server2 to file storage set on Server2 using retro on Server2

Restore test folder to any disk on Server2 with no problems

The key here is that I was coping the files from 10.2.6 to a 10.1.5 server. When the backups were run no errors were reported for the verify even if byte by byte was choosen. I also tried restoring to various disks.

I had problems with other files too. these were just four that I knew that I could get a clean images as a test point. Some of the other files were jpegs in iphoto library, some lib files in the developer sections. I have logs of all the errors.

I was using Restore files and folders and not restore entire disk. Its shouldn't be and issue though. It also would not matter which disk either local or thourgh a client I restored the files to. It is just odd the the Varify did not catach the problem even in byte by byte mode.

If I had the hardware available, I'd test what you _seem_ to be saying. But since I don't, I have to ask that you be more clear in what you're describing (I know you have provided detail, but not the actual steps you performed).

When you use the word "client," are you referring to a machine running Retrospect client software? Or to a machine acting as an Apple Filesharing Protocol client?

On Client drag app from disk image to test folder on Server1 mounted over AFP

Backup test folder on Server1 to file storage set on Server1 using retro on Server1

Restore test folder to any disk on Server1 with errors

You seem to be saying:

- Sitting at machine named 'client' you log into a machine named 'Server1' and mount one of it's available share points (volumes).

- You then drag-copy fiiles from 'client' to 'Server1.'

- You then sit in front of 'Server1' and run Retrospect, backing up the local directory into which you previously copied files.

- Retrospect completes the backup with no errors.

- You then attempt to Restore locally the files you just backed up, and get -36 errors.

On Client drag app from disk image to test folder on Server1 mounted over AFP

Backup test folder on Server2 to file storage set on Server2 using retro on Server2

Restore test folder to any disk on Server1 or Server2 with errors

Here I am just confused. Is the reference in the first line to 'Server1' a typo? Did this test encompase all three machines, or did you simply confirm that the same steps performed on similar hardware/software had the same result?
