Normal Backups using combination of Exabyte and QIC-1000 tapes?

I'm using a different backup program, Veritas Backup Exec Pro, which I don't like. For Veritas BE Pro, I can do backups using both tape drives. Can I do the same with Retrospect Professional. (I have a small home LAN with about 20 GB of data, and can't justify the expense of a Server product.)

I have an Exabyte 8700, and also an old Tandberg QIC drive, with 1 GB tape capacity. I have lots and lots of 1 GB tapes, so I would like to do the following:

Do a Normal backup, all files, using the Exabyte drive. Probably use 3 160m tapes. Then do incremental backups every day or so, using the Tandberg drive.

Every month I start a new Normal backup. After 6 months, I discard (reuse) the incremental backup tapes, but I keep the all files Exabyte tapes for another 6 months. Could I restore from one of these Exabyte tapes?

When I logged in, I had a private message, but I couldn't read it. I'm guessing someone replied to my posting here.

Please re-reply with a public message. In advance, thanks!!

Hi

You are not going to be able to use both drives with the same backup set as the media types are different. You can certainly use both drives for different sets. I suggest giving the trial version a shot to see if you can find a solution that works for you.

Well, I started this thread several months ago. Once I thought about it, it was quite clear that I needed to use the Exabyte drive, and forget about the QIC drive, because of the relative capacities of the media AND the space necessary to store the media. In effect, I can store many times more GB per cubic foot with 8 mm tapes than with QIC tapes.

So, now that the 'retention period' for my QIC tapes has expired, I'm looking to sell them on EBay or some such.
