jshelton
I would like to be able to use my Sony DRU-500A or HP DVD300i to burn CDs and DVDs when I am not doing backups. The software provided with these two drives (Record Now, and DLA) seem to interfere with Retrospect. I have only been able to do a backup when I completely de-install the other software. So, burning a CD last night took me several hours, including installation of software, burning, and de-installation. Are there known software packages that co-exist nicely with Retrospect Professional 6.5? I am running Windows 2000 Professional.
awnews
I only have CDRWs (no DVDRWs) but I have Windows XP Pro Retro 6.5 Nero 5.5.x (haven't bothered upgrading to the new Nero6) and Windows XP Pro Retro 6.5 EasyCD 5 (haven't bothered upgrading to the new EzCD6) Prior to this I was running W2K Pro with similar (i.e. maybe Nero 5.0 or a slightly earlier version of EzCD) software. These seemed to co-exist fine for me. I've never used the InCD module (heard of some conflicts). And I tend to run Retro using NT Passthru rather than ASPI which seems to reduce conflicts (e.g. it doesn't matter what version of ASPI Nero is using). kaikow
The problem is likely that the CD writing software is grabbing control of the drive before yiu start REtrospect. In another thread, I pointed out that it appears that a way to overcome such problems is to: 1. REmove media from the CD drives. 2. Start the relevant app, in this Retrospect. 3. Then insert the media. This might allow REtrospect to grab control before the other software gets in the way. Dunno if this works for all software, but I would give it a try. jshelton
I agree that the problem is some CD/DVD software packages grab control of the drive. I have tried the recommendation of not inserting media until Retrospect is started, but this has not helped. I'm specifically looking for recommendations of products that behave nicely with Retrospect. Does Dantz recommend any such products? It is frustrating to buy a drive, such as the Sony DRU-500A, which has lots of software and a label saying "Dantz Retrospect" on it, and yet find out that one cannot install most of the software when Retrospect is installed. kaikow
I found, at least with Nero/InCD, I had to make darn sure that Nero/InCD had released its hold on the drive. Might not happen instantly.
jshelton
After a bunch of other testing, I find that I can use RecordNow compatibly with Retrospect. When RecordNow is not running, it doesn't lock up the DVD. The trick for installation (from the HP dvd writer installatio disc) was to manually install RecordNow instead of using the installation screen which also dumps a bunch of other stuff on the computer. =John=
Bob
There is no difference in what CD/DVD App that you choose. Both Roxio, and Ahead will work fine. But I prefer to start up Retrospect first, before sliding the discs in. I can do without the whirling sound. Kind of reminds of the QIC-80 days.
