pixelbend
I am currently running Retrospect 5.1 Workgroup on a B&W G3 400 running OS X Server 10.1.4 I am attempting to backup 10 Macs and 2 PCs to 2 160 GB Firewire drives. One is in a case and the other is connected to a FireWire Drive Dock. My problem is that every night, it gets about 5-10% of the way through the nightly backup and stops. The error is "Unexpected End of Media", but the firewire drive is still running and is not even close to capacity. Any ideas?
natew
Hi How are these drives formatted? Does the failure happen when backing up to either of the drives? Does the problem seem to depend on the client you are backing up? Thanks Nate
pixelbend
The drives are formatted as Mac OS X Extended, the backups always fail in the middle of backing up the first client drive (which happens to be the server the drives are located on). Thanks for the help.
alanrh
Is is possible that the one in the dock is overheating? How warm is the room? If it is just sitting exposed, try putting a fan on it to keep it cool. It might overheat because of the constant write action of a backup. CallMeDave
Quote: the backups always fail in the middle of backing up the first client drive (which happens to be the server the drives are located on). Huh? Now I'm confused... - Retrospect 5.1 runs on your B&W 400 - Your Backup Sets are located on external FW drives, connected to this B&W - During the backup of your LOCAL hard drive to the Backup Sets on either of the FW drives, you get an error. - The error always happens during the Copy phase (not the Compare phase) and always when Retrospect is trying to copy data from the same Source. Questions: - Have you tried changing the order of your Backup Script, so that Sources other then your Local hard drive (such as Client machines) are backed up first? - If so, what happens? It could very well be a communication issue with the FireWire bus. You could try removing one of the drives from its external case, and slave it to the ATA bus in the G3.
