Tape life and backup strategies

Is there any way that tape life should be a factor when deciding how frequently to run a recycle backup?

I estimate that I could run incremental backups for two months onto a single 80-GB tape. If I rotate among 5 tapes, I could probably do incremental backups for nine months.

We don't need 9 months of backup on five tapes, so I could schedule recycle backups at staggered three-month intervals.

But staggered nine-month intervals would minimize recycle backups.

What will get the most use out of my tapes? Intuitively it seems to me that minimizing recycle backups is gentler on the tapes. Am I right to equate recycle backups-which entail overwriting the tape-with wear?

Thanks for any help in thinking about this!

Hi

Even though the front of the tape is not being written to it is still being dragged across the read head every time you do a backup. In other words, not doing recycles will save some wear and tear on the tape but not a great deal.

I suggest seeing going by the useage recomendations provided by the manufacturer rather than adjusting your recycle schedule.
