CallMeDave
Quote: Selecting:Folder - Red, Green, Blue Generally Retrospect will report 0 files copied because 0 files are supposed to be copied. When using selectors, this is generally due to user error in constructing the selectors. - What exactly are the selectors you've constructed? - If you click on Files Chosen, do you see files selected for Duplicate (check mark)? - If you select All Files do things behave differently? You've chosen to provide only vague information regarding what you're doing. No one is going to be able to help you without without more. tangledwebster
Let's try to get a clear understanding of the evironment that we're taking about here. For starters, Retrospect is far from being an inexpensive product relative to its ease of use. I have spent endless hours reading and struggling with the product. The fact is Retrospect is vague with respect to details that a novice user, such as myself, needs to know in order to do a respectable job of a desired backup. I have spoken to many other college students, such as myself, that also have endlessly struggled with the learning curve required of Retrospect. Secondly, as for my "vaguesness" as you put it, you obviously have no real comprehension of the amount of effort, detail and familiarity required to accuratly desribe what Retrospect does or even how a novice user can describe how one configured the blessed program. Why don't you come up with a fill in the blank form that a user could show you just what the situation is? General Questions are not good. It has to be specific. A configuration report would be perfect, but, I noticed that Retropect is weak in its logging and reports with respect to the lack of configuration details. Why don't you come up with a fill in the blank form that a user could show you just what the situation is? You could take some time and browse through some of my previous seven hundred and seventy five posts, where I have often provided exactly such a blank form. That could give you an idea of my level of comprehension of what's required to describe how this program works. In fact, my previous post in this very thread included three spefic questions (I even put a handy dash in front of each one), none of which you bothered to address in your reply. This is an open Forum. Anyone can jump in. But when every post from a prospective helper is a plea for information from the helpee, solutions are not forthcoming. - You made selectors. What do they look like? - If you try the Duplicate without the selectors, does the program work as you expect? Dave
tangledwebster
I should clarify, I did not intend to remark on your expertise regarding Retrospect, rather I was commenting the your perspective to the level and amount time, familiarity and effort that a novice user would need in order to accurately account for what or how a novice use should explain how they configured Retrospect. I have replied earlier to your request for info to the best of my ability. What is lacking here is a means to exactly reflect how Retrospect is configured given a specific instance. Perhaps screen shots would a better method of the portrayal of just how Retrospect is configured in a given instance. In this case, I would need to know how to send you the screenshots and how to take them on a Mac? Please don't take offence. Non is or was intended. CallMeDave
Quote: I have replied earlier to your request for info to the best of my ability. In your second post to this thread (after I replied with a request for more complete information), you wrote: >Selecting:Folder - Red, Green, Blue I suggested three questions you could answer, that might help Forum readers to identify the cause of your problem: - What exactly are the selectors you've constructed? - If you click on Files Chosen, do you see files selected for Duplicate (check mark)? - If you select All Files do things behave differently? You chose not to address any of these, and instead you wrote about the cost/complexity ratio of the product. So for my next reply, I made the request for information more succinct: - You made selectors. What do they look like? - If you try the Duplicate without the selectors, does the program work as you expect? And now you suggest that you've provided as much information as you're capable of providing. If this is true, if you cannot post even the most basic configuration information, then a "user helping user" forum such as this is not going to be an avenue of help for you. Dantz provides technical support (free for some period of time when you first purchase the program). You should call the nice people there; they'll attempt to walk you through your configuration issues. Dave
