Eror 206: Clarification, s'il vous-plait?

Doubt that my French is correct, but where can I get the details of the sense codes in the following message issued by Retrospect Pro 6.5:

Additional error information for device "Plextor CD-RW" [0:0],

Sense > f0 00 03 00 02 bf 05 0a 00 00 00 00 11 05 00 00 00 00

(Plextor|CD-R PX-W4824A|1.04)

I've only had the drive and media for a bit less than two months. Today, I decided to try creating a backup set on th CD-RW media.

1. First try, all files were backed up, no errors. Then, near the end of the compare, I got 13 execution errors, each was error 206, either trouble reading or trouble positioning. This was followed by the message supra.

2. Second try, SAME media. all files were backed up, no errors. Then, near the end of the compare, I got 10 execution errors, each was error 206, either trouble reading or trouble positioning. Well, 10 < 13, so that's an improvement. Sense code was the same, except "bf 05" instead of "c1 f5".

3. Third try, I used a never before used CD-RW media. No errors occurred,

Questions:

a. Where are the sense codes defined?

b. Is there a "scandisk", or surface scan test, for CD-R/CD-RW media?

Hi

Those sense errors are generated by the device. Retrospect is just reporting the information. For more details you will have to contact the drive manufacturer - although I think what your seeing may be based on an industry communication standard of some kind

Retrospect tends to like media that has never been used before. I'd stick with that if you can. You can also use the erase function in Retrospect in lieu of a scan disk. Retrospect does a long erase (very long) to make verify the disks integrity. I recommend doing the erase before you start a backup.

I did call Plextor about the sense codes.

The techie had no idea what they meant or where to find info.

He suggested that if I could not get the answer from Dantz, then I would have to call Plextor back and ask for "engineering".

If those codes are being issued by the Plextor drive, then that was a very poor response from Plextor.

I've concluded that there is a bad spot on the media.

I've been able to do the same backup with 1 previously unused CD-RW disk and with 3 previously used CD-RW disks.

I used both Nero's Erase and Retrospect's Erase.

Still got errors, but only 4 both times.

Called Verbatim, I'm getting 1 replacement media.

However, I did make some interesting observations doing this, but that deserves a separate thread.
