svhart
I have version 5.1 for Mac for my G4 desktop and G3 laptop computers. The G4 has a super drive so I can write to a CD/DVD, my laptop doesn't have a super drive. As such, my laptop has the client Retrospect software on it so I can back it up (via a network) on a CD on the super drive on the G4, which has the Desktop Retrospect version. However, I want to use Retrospect to create a bootable version of my laptop on a firewire drive that is connected to my laptop. So, what other version of Retrospect is compatible with the client software that is currently on my laptop. Over the years, I have accumulated many versions of Retrospect including the last version of Retrospect Express 5.0 and the desktop version of Retrospect 5.0 (not to mention various 4.0 versions). What combination will work? Thanks, Scott
natew
Hi, Retrospect client version 5.0.540 can be used with both Retrospect 5.0 and 5.1. Using the latest version is recommended of course. Your Retrospect 4.X clients and software have gone the way of OS9... Nate

And I may have missed the point, but why are you asking about another version of Retrospect? (i.e. what is wrong with using Retrospect 5.1?) I haven't consulted the manual about duplicate, but am familiar with the Restore options. How complicated it is depends a little on whether you are running Mac OS X on the laptop. The approved method in Retrospect 5 for restoring Mac OS X disks was to get the same version of the OS onto the target disk by hand, then do the restore over the top. Retrospect 5.1 supports a restore booted from a CD, so at least under some circumstances supports a restore onto an empty disk.
svhart
both the desktop and laptop are using OS 10.2.6 For my laptop, I need to have Retro's client software so I can connect to the G4 desktop so I can create CD/DVD backups. But, I also need another version of Retro on my laptop so I can create a bootable backup on a firewire drive. So, can I have Retro's client software (version 5.1) AND either Retro's Express (5.0) or Retro's Desktop (5.1) on my laptop. An additional Retro application is necessary because the client software cannot work independently to create a bootable backup from my laptop to an external drive. At least this is my understanding. I hope this is more clear Thanks, Scott
shadowspawn
I have only used the same version of Retrospect and client software installed on the same computer, and not as a permanent arrangement. My opinion (not backed up by facts) is that you should be ok installing one of your 5.0 versions in addition to the 5.1 client. I recommend you avoid attempting to access the client while Retrospect is running on the client, there are limits to what is likely to work. One of the updates to Retrospect 5.0 improved duplicate operations, so do use the highest available version of 5.0. (You can also restore the laptop backup onto the firewire drive from your desktop computer, but a duplicate executed on the laptop is much more direct.) Yes. The Client software doesn't care about the content of your drives. Retrospect is just another application bundle for it to back up.
