Why? Am I missing something? $60 for what?

• Home network protection expanded to include two networked computers.

we already have that in 5.0

• Enhanced support for the latest CD/DVD drives.

fine, but my drive is supported

• Bootable Mac OS X disaster recovery.

fine, but I can do without this

• Performance and reliability enhancements for Mac OS X.

Sounds good, but what enhancements. I have not been able to locate a list.

So, why am I being asked to spend US$60? I am not clear on this. Seems a lot of money for what?

One other feature is Red Hat Linux client support.

There are new features which some people definitely want, and Dantz have chosen to charge for the update adding these features. As with any established product, some upgrades don't add features of universal interest.

OK, fair enough. But where does that leave all the other users. I'm a version 5 user. Version 5 works OK, for the most part, so I can stick with it. However I'm someone who likes to keep my software uptodate, especially with any bug fixes etc. So therefore I'd like to upgrade to 5.1 for that reason. However, 5.1 does not provide me with any extra functionality. If there was a small upgrade fee, I could understand it, but it isn't. I'm a freelance photographer, and would be buying it for my business, so can claim the money back, but its still a rip off. It does not contain any xtra functionality for most of its current users, i.e. the ones that would be upgrading. It is mainly a bug fix release for those users.

So what are those users supposed to do? Do I just stick with 5.0 until a newer version comes out which does solve some of Retrospects long standing issues (like taking control of all CD burners etc.) or what? It simply makes no economic sense for me to pay for 5.1 just to fix some bugs, which weren't that bad in the first place and I'm sure many users feel the same.

By all means charge for upgrades, in the same way Apple charges for its. I agree with the charging, but the amount Dantz is charging is not proportional to the added value that I would get from the upgrade.

  • 2 weeks later...

Tell me about it. I just forked over the $60 plus $20 more for hard media on my 5.0 upgrade a mere six weeks ago. I purchased direct from Dantz and at the time there was no indication on their site as to a newer upgrade on the horizon. Why not cut a break for those who have recently upgraded as some other vendors do.
