Lite-On LSC-24081M slim drive for laptops (CDR/CDRW/DVD)

Recommended Posts

The JVC manufactured Lite-On LSC-24081M slim combo cd/cdrw/dvd laptop drive

seems to be a drop-in upgrade for the cd/dvd of the PowerBook G3 and FireWire (Pismo)

models. I purchased the external (MX) product and removed the shell and USB-2/ATAPI

converter board to obtain the bare drive.

Installing it in the Pismo 400 was trivial:

- remove 6 small Philips screws and remove the old cd/dvd mechanism

- plug in the LSC-24081M and replace the screws

- remove the Lite-On bezel from the drive as it's incompatible with the side profile of the PowerBook

- install in laptop and test

I found that CD, CDR, CDRW and DVD worked flawlessly in Mac OS 10.2.6

I found that Retrospect failed to complete the manual configuration procedure in version 5.1

with driver update 5.11 however the log file reports success...!! After calibration the media

is reported to be incompatible.

I can initialize, mount and use CDR or CDRW media as removable disks however they

are not accepted by Retrospect as raw media...??

I am puzzled by the way Retrospect throws up an error dialog when the user halts the

manual device configuration process. I would like to correspond with anyone who has had

success with the manual device configuration.

Hi

So are you saying that when you put in a blank-fresh from the package disk into the drive, Retrospect says it is incompatible?

When you ran the configurator did you run it for all of the types of media you want to use with Retrospect? If you only configured the drive for CDR it will not use CDRW or DVD media.

I inserted a CD-R (48X) and Retrospect performed its tests and reported success in the log.

Retrospect then ejects the media and dialogs "please insert the disc if necessary".

At this point I pressed the STOP button to exit the configuration sequence (I find no

other way to exit...) since I do not wish to calibrate any other type of media.

I discarded the CD-R and inserted a FRESH disc from the same stack as the configuration sample.

The device window shows "loading" then "incompatible" for the new media.

Note that the drive works without problem outside of Retrospect using every type of media

that I have on hand...and yes I disabled auto-mounting in System Preferences:CDs & DVDs

befor running Retrospect.

The problem has been resolved:

The dialog requesting the insertion of media "if necessary" is confusing since it

seems to offer the user some discretion as to whether the action is "necessary".

Actually it should command, "Reinsert test media to advance to next configuration step."

... this repeats until the routine has completed its steps ...

Only then does the routine offer to accept a new type of media or to exit (complete)

the configuration.

I was simply not patient enough since the process did not seem to be advancing.

I was aborting the test of the first media type without understanding that configuration

had not been completed for that media type. There is no granular progress indication at

present but just a seemingly unending loop or insertion requests.

Dantz has a tech note on line that has more detail than the Readme file that comes with v5.1
