kristerlaag
I have an Mac OS X 10.2.6 Server, I run Retrospect on a separate Client. I wish to mount the servers volumes as root, but I can't. Any ideas?

This has nothing to do with Retrospect. What _exactly_ are you hoping to do? Dave
kristerlaag
Well, in order to be able to backup all files on the server, I must have the permissions to do that for every file. The only user that have theese right is 'root' Therefore, I need to log in to my 10.2.6 server (via AFP) as user 'root' (as stated in Retrospect documentation) and mount the volumes on the Retrospect Backup Server. The problem is that I can´t get it to work as it did in 10.1 server. The reference on www.dantz.com to Apple Knowledge Base article is not useful. I have spent more that 8 hours of searching on the web, apple mailinglists, forums to solve this. I can login in as root with SSH to the server so I know it should work. I have set 'allow_root_login' to 1 in NetInfo on the server.
natew
Hi Is there are reason you are not using Retrospect client to backup the server? The client gives you full access to every file on the machine and it allows you to do a full system restore if needed. You will need Retrospect server edition of course... kristerlaag
I get higher speeds using mounted volumes. The BUS is just another user to the server. The Client software has at least prior to 5.1 used too much resources I like the idea of backing up with mounted volumes. I don´t need to be able to restore the server, just the data. Yes, I have Retrospect Backup Server.

If they tightened it up in Jaguar, I'm not surprised. I wouldn't have expected it to work. The Retrospect docs that talk about root user only refer to logging into the Aqua finder as root (on the local machine), so that the Finder user and Retrospect are using the same effective user ID. There might be some magic NeXt way of doing this. You check out the tutorials on afp548.com? The Retrospect Client is probably the only way you're going to get all files from a remote machine. Yes, it's resource intensive, but the newer client seems to be better behaved then it was before. Dave
kristerlaag
>The ability of Apple's implementation of AFP in OS X to mount a remote volume as that remote volume's root user is independent of Retrospect. I am aware of that, but I thought this was the place to ask for a solution. >If they tightened it up in Jaguar, I'm not surprised. I wouldn't have expected it to work. Why should it not work? Is it more or less dangerous than letting me connect with SSH? >The Retrospect docs that talk about root user only refer to logging into the Aqua finder as root (on the local machine), so that the Finder user and Retrospect are using the same effective user ID. So what is the point of using mounted volumes when you can´t be sure of backing up all the files? >There might be some magic NeXt way of doing this. You check out the tutorials on afp548.com? Yes I have checked the tutorials on afp548, and also on other places. >The Retrospect Client is probably the only way you're going to get all files from a remote machine. Yes, it's resource intensive, but the newer client seems to be better behaved then it was before. That is the essence of my problem. I do not want software on my server that behaves "better". I want software that behaves, that I can control the behaviour of. Retrospect Client is not that software.
