gold47
I am unable to boot from the supplied Retrospect 5.1 CD on my "beige G3" (an "OldWorld" machine). I've tried selecting the CD as my startup disk (under OS X), and also tried booting while holding the "c" key down. I have *no* trouble booting from my DiskWarrior 3 CD into X, so it's not the drive. What happens is the "happy Mac" appears, then a chime, then the "happy Mac", etc. If I release the "c" key (or am booting by having selected the Retrospect CD as my startup disk), eventually the machine boots into OS X from my normal startup disk, *not* the Retrospect CD!! gold47
I previously reported that I was unable to boot from the 5.1 the "disaster recovery" OS X CD, using a "beige" G3 (an "Oldworld" machine). Well, guess what? I tried booting my PowerBook G3 (the "Wallstreet" model, also an "Oldworld" machine) and the CD won't boot it either! I can select the Retrospect CD as the startup disk (it *does* showup as having a valid OS X system on it) but it won't boot into X from the CD -- it trys, and then ends up booting from the PB's internal disk. My conclusion is that the retail "5.1 upgrade" disk DOES NOT SUPPORT "oldworld" machines, even though there is nothing in the system requirments or "read me" which says this. A pitty -- I upgraded *specifically* because Dantz said it came with a bootable disaster-recovery OS X disk. Guess I'll have to demand a refund. ps: before anyone askes -- the CD seems completely readible, and I can access the files on it and run the OS X and OS 9.x "Install Retrospect" installers from it just fine. Just can't *boot* from it.
skimark
I had the same result you did. I specifically upgraded to 5.1 to get the ability to restore w/o having to reinstall the OS on my Beige G3 and I can't boot from the upgrade disk either. I have tried it by selecting the RD disk in both 9.2.2 and 10.2.6 and also holding down the 'C' key and nothing works. They either need to come up with a fix or refund our upgrade price! We have not yet re-tested the Wallstreet. We are working on a solution, and will post when available. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused customers. gold47
I have been informed from Dantz Tech Support that indeed, it seems the problem affects all "Oldworld"-architecture machines (such as the Wallstreet PBs, too). Dantz will work with with Apple to resolve this issue and we should join the mailing list referred to in the previous reply to keep informed.
