kathleenC
Hello there! Has anyone had the problem of trying to restore any file from a tape (using DLT tapes) all files are listed in my storage set, I chose what I need downloaded (restored) and when I say start, the tape will just spin back and forth, not being able to find the files I'm trying to download. The only way for me to stop it is to turn the drive off (I wait until the spin slows so not to break the tape) I have since verified the storage set, and that had no problems. After that, I tried restoring again, and nothing happened...couldn't find the file again. Then I recreated a storage set from tape, and that worked just fine. Tried to restore from the new storage set, and that didn't work either. I see that the files are there, but just can't get them off of the tape. These were my first tapes I ever created...were created on a Mac OSX server (using 8.6 shell) since then I have upgraded the server to Jaguar....I thought maybe that would be an issue, but I am retrieving from other tapes that were created on the older system. ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks so much...Kathleen
matre
How long does the tape search before you shut it off? Have you attempted to select any other files in the same set to restore?
kathleenC
HI...I have let the retrieval go for like 45 minutes the most. It's just too long. When I tried to restore another file...it worked...so, I thought...hey..me verifying the storage set worked...so I put it away..but, then when I tried to get another file from it, it did the same thing again..just spun forever!! so, so far I have verified and rebuilt the sets with no luck. thanks..Kathleen
natew
Hi, Unfortunately it sounds like the files you are after are on a bad spot on the tape. Rebuilding the catalog does not read all the data on the tape. It is not unusual for a recatalog to suceed while restores fail. Chances are there is only a small section on the tape that is bad. Can you narrow down the backup date of the files that won't restore? That will at least help you track how large the failure is. How old is this tape? How many times has it been written to? kathleenC
thanks for your reply....the good thing is I do have a back up of the tape...I'm going to see if I can get stuff off of that.... thanks so much for your help! if I can't get the backup of the backup working, do you have any other suggestions?god, is there any way to get the info off of the tape???? to answer your question...the last retrieval I tried to do, was just a random file I picked...not from the same date of the other troubled files, and those didn't work either...it seems that the whole tape is unhappy!!
