caseymc
HELP?! Retrospect 5.0.238 Desktop crashes when I set off a manual backup. I go through the manual selection process and everything is fine. The tape rewinds, and as soon as it starts to write a file to tape Retrospect locks up, (spinning wheel icon locks) then computer freezes when I try to stop/pause/quit. Specs: G4 1gig, OS 10.2.6, Retrospect 5.0.238 Sony AIT SDX-300C SCSI Card ATTO ExpressPCI Pro UL3D Medea VideoRaid RTR (Computer not networked, just backups to the 1 tape deck) This problem has been plagging me for ages and I'm going nuts. If anyone is kind enough to shed some light, I will be so ever thankful. Casey
natew
Hi, Judging from the timing of the error I think this is a SCSI communication issue. If you run a test backup to a file backup set does Retrospect crash? To start, check out the basics- Disconnect other SCSI devices, Make sure your drive is terminated properly, make sure your SCSI cable isn't kinked, try a new cable etc. Also make sure that the number of pins on your SCSI card matches the number of pins on the device. In your case they should both be 68 pin narrow I believe. If not that is most likely the problem. pjroberts
I have the same problem. The only work-around I have found is to restart before I do a backup (I know, under OS X we should almost never have to restart). I even have to do a restart before I can recover a file. The strange thing is that after I restart, I can work for a "while", where "while" is not days and days but can be an hour or so, and Retrospect will work fine. Since I updated my ExpressPCI firmware to 1.66 I have not tried to see if Retrospect will work without a restart, mostly because some other freezes have not gone away since the firmware update. Are you saying that your machine freezes in programs other then Retrospect? It sounds as if you have a hardware problem that Retrospect is revealing.
