tailspin
For the life of me I can't figure out how to back up an offsite computer over the Internet (TCP/IP). Yes, I RTFM, yes I've rummaged around the Dantz website, yes I've read forum messages. I'm running 5.0.238 on a host G4, backing up two other local G4s to the host via Ethernet and one file to a remote FTP site via Internet and TCP/IP. That all works fine. How do I tell Retrospect on the host the indentity of the remote machine (which is connected to the web via DSL?)
AmyJ
First, you need to have the client software installed on the network machine. Next you have to have the ability to access it. This may not be possible through a public ISP. Does the machine have a static IP address? Can you ping it? If the machine has a static, publicly accessible IP address or DNS name, you may be able to add it by address if you are running Retrospect Workgroup or Server. Configure > Clients > Network > Add by Address Typically, trying to backup a machine via this method can be pretty slow. Also, going through another company's ISP doesn't leave you much room for troubleshooting if there are problems. You have no control over their equipment or settings.
