Desktop 5.1 quits unexpectedly...

Recommended Posts

I just upgraded to 5.1 and am using it with 10.2.6. For some reason I can't get thru a full backup without the program either quitting completely w/o any kind of message, or having a full kernel panic, or also it has quit and gone to the gray screen stating that I must restart my computer. I had similar problem with Express 5.0 but not nearly as frequently. I never figured out why Express did it, and I certainly don't know why 5.1 is doing it. Any help to eliminat this problem is greatly appreciated.

The grey screen with restart instructions in various languages is the Jaguar kernal panic screen. Accept no imitations.

Since kernal panics are almost always related in some way to hardware, you should provide the Forum with a complete description of your setup and configuration.

Certainly couldn't hurt...

My hardware setup: Beige G3 DT, upgraded to 500 mhz G3, 512mb ram, Acard ATA 133 card connected to internal 80g Maxtor and 40G Maxtor drives, OWC 80G Firewire external drive for backup, Firewire is provided by a Sonnett Tango card (USB & Firewire ports) and a LiteOn 42x24x42 internal CDRW. There is also a factory installed Jaz drive internally mounted. Hope someone can help me get rid of this problem. I turned on the crash reporting feature of Console and even tho I couldn't make sense of most of it, it seemed to point to something in Retrospect causing the problem.

Thanks,

Mark

For testing purposes, try backing up to anything _but_ the Firewire drive. Can you successfully backup to the internal Maxtor, the Jaz or the CDRW?
